From overwhelm to order: practical tools on how to think clearly when life feels loud
Have you ever felt like your mind has too many tabs open? You’re not alone. In a world that moves fast and demands more, it’s easy to feel like you’re drowning in noise. Tasks pile up. Emotions blur together. Decisions feel foggy. When we’re overwhelmed, we often try to do more in hopes of finally “catching up”—but true clarity doesn’t come from doing more. Clarity comes from reconnecting to what actually matters. And neuroscience shows us how. Let’s dive in,
Understanding Chaos Through the Brain
Our brains thrive on predictability and pattern recognition. When life becomes unpredictable, the brain activates its survival circuits, flooding us with stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. These stress signals impair the prefrontal cortex—the part of the brain responsible for focus, decision-making, and insight.
Translation? When you’re overwhelmed, your brain physically can’t think clearly.
But clarity isn’t a luxury. It’s a tool for survival—and it’s trainable.
🧠 Coach Claire Tip: Before making a decision or responding in overwhelm, try box breathing: Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4. There are many videos out there that demonstrate this visually, and if this tool resonates with you, it’s worth saving a link or video to your phone or laptop to have on hand when you’re in need of calm and clarity. This technique calms the nervous system and shifts the brain from reactive to reflective mode.
Coaching Questions for Inner Clarity
Instead of trying to control the chaos outside, shift the lens inward. Here are 4 coaching questions to pause the spiral and anchor yourself back to clarity:
- What am I really feeling right now?
Name it to tame it—emotions processed are emotions passed. - What is the one thing I can control in this moment?
Focus reduces overwhelm. Action builds momentum. - If I trusted that clarity would come, what would I stop doing?
Release false urgency. Make space for clarity to land. - Whose voice am I listening to most in this chaos—mine, or someone else’s?
Discernment sharpens intuition.
Journaling or free writing through these questions if you have 5 to 10 minutes also helps calm the mind and the brain. Putting pen to paper and focusing on these answers draws your attention towards calm. I call this a ‘brain declutter’, a tool I often us with my clients and personally too.
Daily Practices for Mental Space
These aren’t big shifts—they’re micro-habits that make macro impact over time:
🧘♀️ 5-minute clarity reset:
Set a timer. Close your eyes. Breathe. Say to yourself:
“I feel… I need… I choose…”
This simple grounding script helps you step out of mental chaos and into conscious choice.
🧠 Visual Cues:
Your brain processes clarity better when it can see it.
Try whiteboards, sticky notes, a habit tracker, a realistic to-do list or clarity maps. Getting thoughts out of your head reduces cognitive load.
📝 Mini journaling prompt:
“Right now, I am clear on…”
Even if the list is short, naming your current truths helps you build trust in your own clarity.
You Don’t Have to Wait for Peace & Quiet to Feel Clear
Clarity isn’t something you wait for—it’s something you create. Even in the noise. Even in the mess. Especially in the chaos. choosing clarity in chaos is choosing self-empowerment. Clarity comes not when the world quiets down, this perspective leaves one without self-empowerment. When we are reminded that we are in control of our calm, no matter how chaotic our environment is, we move out of a victim mindset and into an empowered mindset. We begin to intentionally harness our choice to be a more calm, clear person. We begin to remember that there are tools that can be intentionally chosen, tools that specifically resonate with each of us individually, that can be implemented into our daily lives until they become habits. Once they become habits, you become a calm person. A more resilient person. That is self-empowerment.
