In a world filled with distractions and demands, finding moments of peace and joy can feel elusive. Yet, the practice of gratitude and the recognition of “glimmers” offer a powerful antidote. As Deb Dana beautifully puts it, “Glimmers are the gentle reminders that safety, joy, and connection exist all around us—we just have to notice them.” This blog delves into the neuropsychologically-backed path to peace and positivity, revealing how these small yet transformative practices can rewire your brain for greater resilience, clarity, and fulfilment.
The Science of Gratitude
Gratitude is the practice of shifting our focus from what’s missing to what we already have. This shift fosters a sense of abundance, reducing stress and enhancing overall well-being. Neuroscientific research reveals that when we engage in gratitude, the brain activates the reward system, releasing dopamine and serotonin—neurotransmitters associated with pleasure, motivation, and emotional regulation. In contrast, focusing on stressors or negative experiences increases cortisol levels, which, when chronically elevated, can lead to anxiety, depression, and even physical health issues. Studies have shown that a regular gratitude practice not only improves mental health but also strengthens personal resilience and enhances relationships.
“Gratitude turns what we have into more than enough. It turns what we have in abundance“.
The Science of Glimmers
Before we dive into Glimmers, we have to speak about The Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges in 1994. It explains how our autonomic nervous system (ANS) responds to stress, safety, and social connection.
The theory identifies three states of the nervous system:
- Ventral Vagal State (Safe & Social) – When we feel safe, connected, and regulated. This state allows us to engage with others, think clearly, and experience joy.
- Sympathetic State (Fight or Flight) – When we perceive danger, our body activates stress responses like increased heart rate, adrenaline release, and readiness to fight or flee.
- Dorsal Vagal State (Shutdown or Freeze) – When stress becomes overwhelming, we may disconnect, feel numb, or shut down as a survival response.
Deb Dana, a therapist specializing in Polyvagal Theory, introduced the concept of “glimmers” to help people recognize small moments of safety and connection that shift them toward the ventral vagal state.
In neuroscience and psychology, “glimmers” are the opposite of triggers—small, everyday moments that bring us joy, calm, or a sense of safety. These can be as simple as feeling the warmth of the sun, hearing a favourite song, or seeing a loved one smile. Noticing and savouring these moments activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress responses and promoting emotional regulation. Research suggests that intentionally focusing on glimmers helps rewire the brain toward positivity, fostering emotional stability and overall well-being.
“Glimmers are the gentle reminders that safety, joy, and connection exist all around us—we just have to notice them.”

Combining Gratitude & Glimmers: A Transformative Duo for Mindset Mastery
Practicing gratitude and recognizing glimmers go hand in hand in reshaping our mindset, our emotional wellbeing and even our physical health. By cultivating gratitude, we train our brains to notice the good in our lives, which makes it easier to spot and appreciate glimmers. In turn, acknowledging these small moments of joy reinforces a gratitude mindset, creating a positive feedback loop that enhances resilience, happiness, and overall fulfilment. In essence, gratitude lays the foundation for rewiring the brain, while glimmers provide the daily reinforcement needed to sustain a positive and fulfilled state of mind.
