From Intention to Identity: How to Transform Your Goals into Who You Are

1. Intention: The Foundation of Change

Transformation begins with intention. It’s not just about setting a goal; it’s about choosing goals that resonate deeply with your values and strengths. When your goals align with who you are at your core, they become more than just targets to hit—they become guiding lights that lead you toward your best self.

As a coach, my role is to help you discover and clarify your values, strengths, and the vision you have for your life. We start by asking powerful questions: Who do you admire? This simple question can reveal so much. Often, the people we look up to possess qualities that we value in ourselves. For instance, if you admire someone’s discipline and resilience, these are traits you likely value and wish to cultivate in your own life.

2. Behaviour & Mindset: The Bridge to Action

Intentions alone aren’t enough to create change; they must be followed by action. But it’s not just any action—its consistent, intentional behaviour driven by a growth mindset. This is where many people stumble. You can’t just sign up for a gym membership and expect results. You have to show up physically and mentally.

Mindset is crucial in this process. Neuroscience shows that our brains are wired for patterns, and a positive, growth-oriented mindset can rewire your brain to support new behaviours. So, think again about that person you admire. What would their mindset be when facing a challenge or setting a goal? How do they approach daily actions that align with their long-term vision? Modelling their mindset can help you bridge the gap between intention and action.

3. Habits: The Building Blocks of Change

Once you’ve established intentional behaviours, the next step is to turn them into habits. This is where the real magic happens. Habits are the small, consistent actions that, over time, create massive change. Think of it like a river that carves out a canyon. A single drop of water won’t make a difference, but a steady flow, over time, can shape even the hardest rock.

This is the secret to habits: consistency. It’s not about making drastic changes overnight but about making small, sustainable changes that add up. Imagine you want to become a healthier version of yourself. Starting with just a few minutes of walking every day can eventually grow into a deep, ingrained practice. The key is to stick with it, especially when it feels insignificant.

4. Practice, Second Nature, Identity: Becoming

As these habits take root, they become practices—daily rituals that reflect your deepest values and beliefs. When habits become practices, they require less conscious effort because they are now a part of your routine. Over time, they become second nature. You’re no longer someone who “tries to go for a walk each morning”; you’re a walker, or, you’re not just “trying to get fit”; you’re an athlete. This is how your identity shifts.

This transformation is the ultimate goal of coaching: to guide you in aligning your actions with your values so deeply that you become the person you aspire to be. You’re living your purpose, on purpose.

What Does This Journey Look Like in Practice?

Having witnessed life coaching myself during my transition from high school to university, I personally know how powerful it is to have a life coach guiding me through some really tough roadblocks and T-junctions. Who was I outside of high school? Who was I in a whole new city? Who did I need to and want to become? Choosing a degree that would pave the way for my future career was overwhelming, scary, and I didn’t even know where to begin. I had to figure out who Claire is for the first time. Life Coaching helped me not only in learning who I wanted to become and which direction to take to get there, but how to practically grow into my future Claire with brave, supported, small, daily steps.

Now, I have the privilege to guide my clients through journeys of transformation. Together, we set goals that align with who you are at your core, because when we do that, your goals become more than just targets to hit, they become your guiding light that leads you toward your best self.

5 Tips for Setting Aligned Goals

1. Reflect on Your Core Values:
Identify what truly matters to you. Aligning your goals with your personal values ensures that your actions and achievements are meaningful and fulfilling to you.

2. Leverage Your Strengths:
Set goals that allow you to use your natural strengths and talents. When your goals are based on your unique abilities, they are naturally more achievable and rewarding. This ensures consistency.

3. Find Your Why:
Ask yourself why this goal is important. Goals driven by a deeper purpose give you long-term motivation and clarity, especially during challenges.

4. Align Your Goals with WHO You Want to Become:
Instead of focusing solely on outcomes, focus on becoming the person you aspire to be. Let your goals shape your identity and growth. Envision your future self: who is she/he? What would she/he be doing daily? What mindset would she/he be embracing each day.

5. Chase Your Joy:
Choose goals that push you beyond your comfort zone, but that also bring you joy. Learn to chase your joy!

You have the power to shape your life, this is a gift. Starting with intention and moving through the small yet profound steps of transformation until your actions reflect the very essence of who you are. As your coach, I walk with you in turning your aspirations into actions and your actions into identity. Helping you chase your joy and create a life that reflects the very best version of you. Let’s take that first step together.
