Do any of these sound familiar?
- I have to go to the gym at least 5 times next week
- We have to reduce our screen time (Netflix & chill must be controlled)
- I have to get to bed earlier
- I need to go on the latest 12-week diet (no carbs, new me!)
- I need to figure out my work-life balance
Don’t get me wrong, our commitment to making positive changes and improvement in our lives is sincere, and when we set our goals, we’re genuinely, wholeheartedly invested and excited. We’ve got the gym kit, we’ve purchased that meal plan, we’ve cancelled that subscription, we’ve downloaded the app to monitor our screentime… But here’s a question: How long does it last? Yes, you may be able to “box through” the last 10 days of dry January, or read 3 books in 3 months – but did you stay consistent? How long did your goal last for? Did you even enjoy your journey?
“I have to” Goals Sound Like:
There is a more profound question to ask yourself when it comes to goals…
Who do I wish to become?
Purpose-Driven Goals:
When we reframe our thinking around who we aspire to become, rather than what we “have” to do, we begin to align with our deeper purpose. This is what Coaching with Claire is all about.
Here’s Your Golden Nugget:
Here is your golden nugget: when we start asking “Who do I want to become?”, we can get down to the more exciting self-discovery and self-reflective questions! Purpose-driven questions sound like:
I want to prioritise my health, so what would a healthy person choose to do today?
I want to cut down on “Netflix & Chill” and choose to be more present, what can I do instead of turning on the tv? Perhaps picking up that book that’s been collecting dust for a while or enjoying a conversation with your loved one where you attention is fully there. What would someone who wants to get earlier nights do? Perhaps a new evening wind-down routine where you can easily eliminate any distractions that pull you away from getting into bed at a decent time.
Here’s the trick though: you have to want to become this type of person for this new habit to last. What is your reason for committing to this new goal?
Why Your WHY is Important
You’ve heard me speak about how important it is to align our goals with our purpose. Your WHY is your foundation. This foundation is somewhere you get to come back to on the days that you don’t feel like doing the new thing. Those days will come, because your brain doesn’t like change, so it’s incredibly important to create a strong enough why, a vision, to come back to.
